A romantic and mighty castle

Celje Old Castle

Celje Old Castle is a medieval castle on top of a hill above Celje, which was built in the 14th century, but was later renovated and expanded. Today, the castle is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Slovenia.

It was once the seat of the Counts of Celje, one of the most influential noble families in Central Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries. The castle was known for its magnificent rooms, chapels and the castle park. Today, visitors can see the remains of the castle walls and towers, as well as the archaeological excavations in the regional museum, which show the history of the castle and its inhabitants, as well as a collection of antiquities, medieval weapons and clothing, and other items from the history of Celje and Slovenia.

During the summer months, the Old Castle hosts the Living History program, which offers visitors the opportunity to become a part of “living” history. They can enter into sword fights with knights, shoot arrows, flirt with castle princesses, and create in medieval workshops: all in an authentic medieval environment.
